Message From The President PDF Print E-mail

If it were easy, it would be done already and you would be reading about it.

I heard this from my professor the other day and seemed to resonate for our program this year.  Any transition into change isn’t easy, but when taking an organization like the Minnesota Valkyries WRFC into a fledgling Women’s Premier League the changes needed may seem insurmountable.  Between monetary adjustments, player requirements, and evolving leadership roles, one could easily throw their hands up say its impossible.

But, before we succumb to weight of such responsibility, allow me to reiterate the most awesome quality this organization has embraced: the tradition of raising the bar.

We have never accepted mediocrity.  We are never satisfied with average or ordinary.
We thrive on pushing ourselves beyond our personal best both on and off the field.  While some players strive for international rugby competition, all of us strive for mastering intrapersonal competition.  As team leaders, it isn’t easy to see the competition as we do on the field of play.  But mark my words; teams are out there honing their skills, developing new ideas, implementing more efficient strategies.  Whether we are competing on the field or behind the scenes, the common ground is “competition”.  We are competitive by nature and rugby is our arena.

As we shake off the frost and cold of this long winter and look towards the awakening of spring, allow yourself a moment to look inside.  It is time to awaken that competitive drive inside you.  It is time to embrace that yearning to grow, to develop skills that move beyond the comfortable and ordinary to the exceptional and extraordinary.

Together we can all raise the bar.Together we can achieve our personal best.Together we are Valkyries.

As an organization it should come as no surprise that the Valkyries, along with our community, are feeling the effects of these tough economic times. Player and team dues seem to pinch a bit more, travel expenses require increasing creativity to plan, practice and referee needs have been reduced this spring season, and our ability to contribute within the community has been hindered by our club’s own financial burdens. Our books are approaching the red and we have fewer ingredients to cook with.

The Valkyries are five months into the 2009 spring season and have already begun preparation for the fall.  September 2009 will mark the inaugural season of the new Women’s Rugby Premier League, of which the Valkyries will be a part along with seven of the top senior women’s clubs. In planning for this heightened level of play and furthering our club’s commitment to the betterment of women’s rugby, the Valkyries have outlined two primary goals: (1) increased recruitment, (2) increased fundraising.

Simply put, our club needs people and money. With your help we can meet these goals.
It is now, more than ever, that our community of teammates, ruggers, family, friends, and supporters need to pull together to ensure the continuation of Valkyries rugby. You can contribute by visiting the Valkyries website at www.valkyriesrugby.org and clicking the contribute button on the right side of the page or by sending checks payable to MN Valkyries Rugby to: 3941 Grand Ave S., #1, Minneapolis, MN 55409.

Your continued support is appreciated.

 Thank you,

$arah “$haine” Roehl,

Treasurer - MN Valkyries Rugby Club
